Reflection on Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair,a satirical novel written by Thackeray is mainly about the fortunes of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedly,which is intended to satirise the materialism and social snobbishness of his period.

   All the characters in the novel are closely observed and I can feel the author's attitude towards them.He discribes an unscrupulous protagonist with detail resulting in many readers dislike her.On the contrary,this girl's some spirits leave an deep impression on me.As we all know,Becky comes from a poor family and therefore she has no alternative but to face all the problems on her own.As for her,she just  wants to spare all efforts to pursue an ideal life.In contrast,Amelia ,her kind hearted friend,has a merry family,all people around her seem to like her so much and she doesn't request to experience such dilemma .She can seek assistance from many people.To a certain extent,the character may be  designed by Thackeray to emphasize the unfortune of Becky. While most of readers like Amelia,I was deeply attracted to Becky.In their opinion,that the end justifies the means is the best description of Becky. As far as I am concerned,everyone has their own rights to seek an ideal life only belonging to themselves.Only the way that Becky makes use of everything to achieve her ambition is wrong,but the reason why she becomes so unscrupulous is that the dark society at that time impacts on her seriously.Moreover,that she insists on resisting the injustice of fortune is really touched me and that she rises to challenges bravely again and again is well worth appreciating but we should regard her incorrect ways as a cautionary tale.

  After reading this novel,it dawned on me that there are two sides to every story so we should learn from her unyielding spirit and prevent from sliding into complex vanity fair. As the saying goes:"we wouldn't give up being myself for even one second."

 

Call of the wild┄A sharp change from a dog to a wild wolf

Buck had lived in a wealthy family in the South of the United States. He was spoiled and always got his way, thinking he was the king of all things. Later, Buck was sold to the extreme cold in the north of the United States and became a sled dog. Finally, after going through many trials and sufferings, Buck became the leader of the wolf clan and the master of himself.

My favorite character is Thornton, who represents the good side of human nature. He thinks humans are equal to animals. So he treats them as his kids. After Thornton met Buck, they carried a kind of friendship and trust beyond species. As a result of the trust, Thornton was wiling to bet a thousand dollars to prove Buck’s courage and strength.

In the book, Buck experienced the serious beating by the man in a red coat who was just greedy for money. He also had to face the death of his companion because of his weakness and the life-and-death battle with the leaning dog. Finally, He understood the law of “survival of the fittest, the law of the jungle” and became fierce and cunning.

After Thornton’s death, Buck’s last hope for human society fell apart. So he returned to nature in response to the call of the wild. In the end, Buck turned into a “wolf” from a “dog”.

Though Buck grew up in a cruel and dangerous environment, he wasn’t defeated when faced with all sorts of difficulties and hardships. I think we are supposed to learn from Buck.As is known to all, life is full of ups and downs.Let’s face them with a positive attitude even if we are in the deep valley of despair. As a saying goes, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” And I’m confident that those who did not defeat us will make us stronger.   

 

The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde

高三（11）班 晏宇杰

The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson tells a story about doctor Jekyll who was a well-known and respectable person in the UK at that time.Dr Jekyll researched a drug which can switch people’s two entirely different characters during his scientific studies on dual nature of man-good and bad.When Dr Jekyll drank the drug,he became another person called Edward Hyde,shorter and smaller but more wicked and more evil.Drinking it again,he changed back to the person and body of Henry Jekyll who was strong,tall,decent and friendly.From that time,though Dr Jekyll obtained the ability to transform dual personality,a great quantity of trouble came one after another too.The final result was that Hyde took place of Jekyll and killed himself in the room!

Among this book,my favourite character is lawyer Utterson,a man of some contradictions,who is humorless and not talkative.He is very bashful and doesn’t like to reveal his emotions in front of strangers.However,when facing his friends,his eyes are always shining with care and sincerity.Although this kind of emotion can hardly be found in his words,it showed unintentionally in his manners treating people and way of life with no omission.It is his sincerity and kindness to friends that leaves me a deep impression.When he found his friend Jekyll was in trouble,not only was he not afraid of getting into trouble but also he spread no effort to help him without hesitation.I think highly of his deed.Inspired by his behaviour,I have learnt to treat others with sincerity and kindness and be willing to help the needy in any time.

After finishing the book,I am deeply shocked,taking a deep breath and reflect carefully.The experiment which Dr Jekyll did to avoid responsibilities abandoned the ethic,the result of which made Dr Jekyll have a method to escape the responsibilities of good and evil.Rather than saying that the failure of the experiment led to a tragic outcome,it is better to say that Jekyll,who gave up morality and ideal,chose to indulge the primitive hedonic ID,gave up the necessary responsibility of human beings,which led his ego was controlled by the ID,and his escape led to his destruction.As the saying goes”Gold can’t be pure and man can’t be perfect.”I think there is no one without a trace of dirt.On the contrary,everyone consists of good and evil,even the kindest people have the side of evil and the evilest people have the side of kind.The mixed kind and evil is the complexity of human nature,and everyone should shoulder their own evil.The two sides of our own nature are fighting with each other every hour and moment,the winner will control our mind and dominate our behavior.Therefore,we need to restrain our evil thoughts and keep struggling with them.In a word,do not do evil things though they may be insignincant,do not give up good things even if they may be minor matters.

 

Anne of Green Gables

高一（20）班 郭杨紫圆

In the midst of mediocrity, there is a light that never dies.

Anne of Green Gables tells the story of Annie, a kind-hearted and life-loving young woman who loses her parents at a young age and is adopted by Matthew and Marilla of Green Gables at the age of 11, and self-esteem, with their own hard-working, not only by the adopters love, but also win the teachers and students care and friendship.

No doubt I was attracted to Annie's imagination and kindness.Anne loves fantasy. She can always draw endless fun from ordinary life and find beauty in ordinary life. I am also a child who loves fantasy. When I was in kindergarten, I would lie in bed and draw with my fingers before going to bed every night. Draw everything, and draw a lot of what I think, what’s fun, what's easy to use and what's delicious.Therefore, my mother enrolled me in a painting class and asked me to draw all the things I like on paper and keep them.In order to give full play to my imagination, my mother seldom tells me about writing methods in writing. She always lets me write，writes whatever I think, and never restricts my thinking.Now,in writing,although what I have written deviates from the theme, never regret it.I want to read more books in the future. I believe that as long as I insert the wings of imagination on the basis of reading more, reciting more and writing more,I will be able to write excellent articles.

Anne's kindness, Matthew and Marilla, two brothers and sisters, have different personalities, but they all have a kind heart. Their words and deeds set an example for Anne's growth.Their education was not in vain and Anne was also a very kind child. In order to take care of Marilla who worked hard for herself and was alone Anne gave up a great opportunity to further her studies in university.

French writer Hugo once said that the most precious thing in the world is kindness.I think it's quite right. I think only kindness can bring happiness, only kindness can make people happy, and only kindness can make our society harmonious.

In a word, I like the book Anne of Green Gables very much. As long as the mind dreams, unremitting efforts, life will be rich and colorful, life will be beautiful and varied. It has taught me a lot of truth. If you are interested, go and read it, too.

 

 

Read about The Call of the Wild

  During the summer vacation. I read a book called The Call of Wild. I have learned a lot from this book.

  First of all, let me introduce the main content of this book. Back was a strong dog with big bones. Its first master was a powerful man, and he gave Back a good life. Unlucky, it was stolen and sold by the judge's gardener. Then, it was sold to the post office and sent to Alaska as a mail sleigh. After some time, it met an old man. The old man took good care of it. They formed a deep bond between them. But unfortunately, the old man was killed by the Indians. Buck felt very angry and killed some Indians. Finally it has nothing left for human society and came back to the wild.

  In this book, what impressed me most was Buck. It lived a carefree life under the judge's pet. Although it later lived an intolerable life under a bad master. It was still full of life after being rescued by the old man. And revenging for the old man made it more human. That's why I like it.

  The story told us that life has always gained meaning and strength in the constant struggle to survive. We need to respect life and cherish life.

非常荣幸能够在此次作文竞赛中获奖。

我始终认为英语并不只是一门学科，而是一门充满美感的语言艺术。英语阅读中，不论是实用的说明文、层次清晰的议论文论述，还是海明威、莎士比亚等著名作家巧夺天工的艺术描写，都时常令我赞叹。在阅读小说时，我也不断被主人公的美好品格打动。于是，我开始把自己的思考用英语尽可能准确地表达出来。

在各类英语文章的写作中，对于词汇的运用举足轻重。身边很多同学在记忆词汇时都遇到了不小的困难，而我之所以能够相对快地将词汇记住，是因为我学习词汇时“瞻前顾后”。“瞻前”指的是注重理解词汇的来源。例如trap sb. Into doing，意为诱骗某人做某事，我在理解时将其分解：trap意为“使落入险境”，搭配上“into doing”，可以直译为“使某人落入做某事的险境”，而其标准翻译“诱骗某人做某事”也就呼之欲出了。这样一来，不仅加深了对词汇的理解，对其的记忆也在潜移默化中形成了。而“顾后”指的是实际应用。在学习词汇当天，老师一般都会布置对应的作业。在完成词汇练习时，尽量避免翻阅书本、笔记，而是通过自主思考解决问题，不将词组生搬硬套。长此以往，当面临写作时，很多词汇会不由自主地映入脑海。

英语写作中，对名言、谚语的运用常常成为整篇作文的亮点，能起到升华主旨的作用。日常学习时，增加对英语文本特别是小说的阅读，在潜移默化中对作文能力有提升作用。人们常说兴趣是做好的老师，在阅读时有一双发现美的眼睛，在积累好词好句的同时能够增加对英语发自内心的认可，久而久之享受学习英语的过程。

这次写作也暴露出我的一些短板。作文初稿完成后，潘老师对我的作文进行了修改，其中不乏一些细节上的语法错误，对于一些高端词汇的运用也并不完美。我会在日后的学习中更加细致，努力做到精益求精。

最后，感谢潘老师对我的悉心指导，感谢学校给了我这次参赛机会，感谢教育局搭建了我们展示自我的平台。我会更加努力，争取再创佳绩！
